Women in Iran have faced a lack of political representation since 1979. Women have not been allowed to be members of the Guardian Council or supreme leader, and their parliamentary candidates have often been disqualified. In 2021, no woman was allowed to run for president and female judges were dismissed and barred from high courts, despite possessing the necessary qualifications. It was clear that women had not gained equal political rights in Iran.
