Integration Into the Workforce

Women in Iran have slowly gained access to the workforce since the 1970s, with 14% of the labor force being female in 2021. Literacy rates had nearly doubled, yet unemployment remained higher for women and most were concentrated in traditionally female roles. Economic mismanagement, corruption and sanctions had impacted women’s employment opportunities; carpet weaving in rural areas had especially seen a drastic decrease. It was evident that more needed to be done for equal employment opportunities for all Iranians regardless of gender identity.
